World Toilet Day, celebrated on 19th November, is about taking action to ensure that everyone has a safe toilet by vision 2030.
This is part of sustainable development goal SDG 6: sanitation and water. In Kenya large population of people especially those living in informal settlement have insufficient access to toilet.
This means human faeces, on massive scale, is not captured or treated- containing the water and soils that sustain human life through this we are turning our environment in open sewer, toilet and sanitation system must work in harmony with ecosystem. The impact of exposure to human faeces has devastating impact upon public health, living conditions, nutrition, education and economic productivity across the globe.
SDG 6 aims to ensure that everyone has a safe toilet and no one practices open defecation by year 2030. Failure to achieve this goal risks the entire Agenda for sustainable Development Goals.
This year’s World Toilet Day is about nature based solution to our sanitation needs, the theme when nature calls, we have to listen and act. Nature based solution to sanitation and water crisis harness the power of ecosystem Compositing latrines that capture and treat human waste on site, producing a free supply of fertilizer to help plant grow Human made wet lands and reed beds filter waste water before it is released back into the water courses This year Nairobi city county held the event in Kitui village kamukunji Sub County. The village was early this year triggered for open defecation, after cholera outbreak was reported in the area, sensitization on importance of safe disposal of human waste and proper method of hand washing was done by health workers.
The event was commemorated by launching of ecological sanitation facility provided by the Synergy organization which deals with WASH activity in the area. Several sanitation facility in the village was cleaned , messages of safe disposal of human waste shared out, community health volunteers present songs, skits and drams with themes of proper usage of sanitation facilities and safe disposal human faeces .
